1. Gmail Tip – Colour Your Labels
You probably use Labels in Gmail – which act as folders. If not already, create one by right clicking the email you’re in and selecting Label. At the bottom of the labels – you’ll find Create New.
Further, you might not know that you can colour the labels – which flows through to the emails themselves in the inbox. Simply click the little square box at the end of the label in the Inbox navigation pane on the left. A list of colours will appear that you can select from.
2. Colour Your Google Drive Folders
Google Drive – Colour your folders by right (or control) clicking the folder and select the colour.
3. Children and Chores
Oh my goodness, getting the kids to do their ‘jobs’ when they were young was so hard. If one of the six was asked to unload the dishwasher, the answer was “why do I have to do it” (meaning why pick me over my five other brothers/sisters). So we developed a rotating job chart and stuck it on the fridge. Here’s one in Word that you can download and change to suit.
If you are starting from scratch, you might want to write an extensive list of everything that has to be done to run and maintain the house and family: Cleaning, shopping, cooking, gardening, homework help, driving, sports, sickness, etc.
Using this list, separate out the things that only an adult can do. (As your children age, add more responsibilities so you don’t get lazy lugs lying on the sofa on their miniature screens). This gives you more balance; it helps them mature; take responsibility and learn.
Extra Tip: Allocate a role called ‘extra jobs’. This person will cover the chores of someone who is not home.
4. Three Magic Data Clean-Up
It doesn’t matter what database software you use to store your information as you can easily import it into Excel or Google Sheets to manipulate, clean, de-duplicate and add to it. Then you can export it back into your standard database.
Three outstanding quick functions include:
- Text to columns – splits first and last names apart
- Concatenate – will put last names back together (such as van Buren)
- Proper – change each word to a capital instead of all lower or upper case.
